TCM and Mental Health

Many of us know acupuncture helps manage pain and illness. However, did you know that Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) also support mental health?

In TCM, the body, mind, and spirit are a single unit. Therefore, if something is affecting one of these, then the person as a whole is affected. A blockage in the flow of “Qi” or energy damages your physical body and also causes mental and spiritual strain. Mental and emotional disruption is known as “Shen” in TCM.

A strong Shen helps you know your true self, and keeps your mind clear. A weak Shen, sometimes caused by physical and emotional trauma, leads to anxiety, depression, and stress.

This is where acupuncture and TCM play a part in your wellbeing. Acupuncture works to restore the flow of Qi and Shen. This brings balance to the body, mind, and spirit.

Shen Men, an acupuncture point used to treat stress and anxiety.

There are many ear acupuncture points used to help with stress and anxiety. Shen men is very common. Your acupuncturist can also work on restoring Shen by placing needles that nourish and heal your heart. TCM believes the heart is the center of emotions and thinking, so supporting your heart also helps your Shen.

Other methods like meditation, breathing exercises, and being active and in nature can also help strengthen your Shen.

At Whitney Green Acupuncture we provide resources for reducing stress and balancing emotions. We strongly recommend our patients work with a therapist and their primary care provider in combination with their acupuncture treatments when seeking out support for mental health.
