Stomach Energy

While we often consider the heart to be the main organ that affects our health, TCM would probably add that the stomach is just as important!

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Stomach and Spleen work together to help provide your body with energy, not just nutritionally, but also emotionally and mentally. It digests food and drink, but also digests your emotions and thoughts!

The stomach is important in how the body works, because Stomach Qi, or stomach energy, is what “feeds” the other organs enough power to perform their jobs.

If your stomach isn’t functioning properly, then it may result in weak limbs or fatigue since energy isn’t being distributed to your body as well as it should. You might also experience worry, anxiety, and overthinking. Think of it this way – if your food isn’t being digested well, then your thoughts and emotions are probably having a hard time being processed as well!

Some ways to encourage stomach health and function:

  • Think happy thoughts! Whether it’s meditation, qigong, or an activity that brings you joy, staying away from worry and anxiety will help your digestion! A healthy digestion will also help you process when worry and anxiety is high.
  • Eat mostly cooked or warm foods and beverages – your Stomach loves warmth, so eating cold or raw foods (especially nuts and vegetables) and cold drinks can damage Stomach functioning over time. Raw fruit is okay. For those who love ice cream and popsicles, you can still enjoy these cold treats, but do so in moderation!
  • Have your dinner by 6 or 7pm at the latest – this gives your Stomach a chance to rest along with all your other organs! If you eat a lot or heavy foods at night, then you are making your Stomach work overtime when it should be resting.
  • Ginger is great for digestion! Ginger in tea or soup is a great way to warm up your stomach.
  • Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and excessively salty foods. These can cause a bit too much fire in your stomach, and can irritate it.
  • Eat mindfully. Avoid reading, watching TV or looking at your phone while you’re eating. These activities divert blood away from the stomach to your brain, preventing you from digesting food properly.

Take care of your stomach, and your stomach will take care of you!
